A lot of residential and commercial properties in the NY-tri state area have recently been damaged by Hurricane Henri and Ida.
When a hurricane rips through neighborhoods, it leaves behind millions of dollars of damage, most of which is caused by flooding.
Many gyms were flooded recently and now their fitness equipment is damaged or, even in some cases, completely destroyed.
Sometimes it is not possible to repair a treadmill, elliptical or other pieces of gym equipment depending on the severity of the flood.
Saltwater causes rust and degradation of the delicate moving parts as well as the inner components of the motherboard circuitry which are integral to its functionality.
Often you will find that the cost of repairs is very expensive because so many components need to be replaced.
You also can’t guarantee that the flood damage won’t cause other problems with the equipment in the future.
In cases like this it is the safest and best option to replace everything with brand new gym equipment.
If you have flood insurance, you can be reimbursed for the cost to repair and replace all the equipment that was damaged in your gym.
We all remember the devastation of Hurricane Sandy in 2012 but what about Hurricane Irene in 2011?
Irene was the first time since 1972 that NYC and the surrounding area was hit so hard by a hurricane.
A lot of gyms were destroyed by Hurricane Irene and Sandy.
One of these was Metropolis Towers Apartments in Jersey City.
Their gym facilities were flooded by Hurricane Irene and they needed to get all the equipment replaced.
We even had to redo their entire rubber gym flooring because the salt water got underneath.
Imagine what it is like removing rubber flooring that is wet with salt water and smells like fish…
It isn’t fun.
Luckily they had flood insurance which covered the cost of buying brand new fitness equipment to replace all that was destroyed.
We were able to get them back up and running in as little time as possible so that they can return to a regular way of life.
As the hurricanes continue to get more powerful, gyms will be at even greater risk of flooding in the future.
Other than prevention and insurance, the only other thing you can do to mitigate flood damage to your gym is to know how to recover from it.
If you ever find this happening to you or someone you know, we are here to help.
Gym Tech has been dealing with gym flooding recovery since Hurricane Irene in 2011.
